With the platform of ‘Holistic Education for All’ and as an advocate for positive change, Leslassa Armour-Shillingford, Miss Dominica 2013, founded the Dominican Realistic Education and Arts Movement (DREAM) Foundation as an integrative base for all charitable activities in which she is involved.

Through the DREAM Foundation, initiatives with the private sector, government and non-government organizations are being pursued to strengthen existing education systems. The Foundation aspires to work directly with the people of Dominica through events that raise awareness about current issues, in particular, affecting children and youth.  Among other initiatives, the Foundation is coordinating various national and regional activities and fundraising edutainment events to further educate and support teachers and their institutions, especially those working in pre-primary and primary schools.

Launching DREAM Dance Studio at the Old Mill

A Space for ‘Expression’

The DREAM Foundation’s Lead Project 2014 – ‘Old Mill Dance Studio: A DREAM Partner Project’ – furnished the only dance studio on the island with ballet barrés, edge-to-edge mounted mirrors and introduced technology to the space through the installation of a modern sound system that enables wireless access and playback of all media, in all forms, from any device. The project, at competition, conforms with international specifications for testing and training, elevates the standard of instruction offered at the Dominica Institute for the Arts, provides a space for artistic expression and promotes the advancement of all art forms through the display of contemporary pieces by established and upcoming local artists.

To date, over EC$7000 in private and commercial donor funds have been directed to the purchase of materials and equipment for the DREAM Dance Studio project, representing 58 per cent of the annual budget of the Foundation. Notably however, the project would not have been possible without the contribution of an additional EC$2000 in donated materials and over 48 hours of voluntary labour. Special thanks to the Anchorage Hotel Whale Watch & Dive Centre, LIME (Dominica) Ltd., EH Charles & Co. Ltd., Professional Services Inc., J. Astaphan & Co. Ltd., Fine Foods Inc., LA Dupigny & Co. The DREAM Dance Studio at the Old Mill launches on February 7, 2014.

The DREAM Foundation partners with Anchorage LTD

To date, we are very proud that the DREAM Foundation has been able to partner with Anchorage LTD,  a centerpiece of the ecotourism landscape of Dominica for 40+ years, and other key private sector stakeholders, to support four schools and institutions through generous financial and in-kind contributions.

The DREAM-Anchorage LTD partnership enables these schools and institutions to build on or introduce exceptional Holistic Education programs and specifically, to expose their students to Marine Biology through Whale Watching excursions and visits to the Anchorage Marine Mammal Interpretation Center, home of the Caribbean’s only mounted Sperm Whale skeleton where students, enthusiasts and researchers exchange data and share their passion. The Anchorage is proud of its status as the Pioneers of the Dive & Whale Watching industry in Dominica. Through their research, reputation and experience, Dominica has been named “the Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean” and has become a preferred destination for the sighting of the deep-diving Sperm Whale.
